The story of the Aeldari begins long before the birth of the Imperium of Man. At a time when humanity's ancestors still lived on Terra, their civilization already ruled over a vast part of the galaxy. Their technology surpassed anything other species could imagine. They manipulated the Warp with disconcerting ease, travelled between the stars with no difficulty, and built cities whose beauty seemed to defy the laws of physics.

For millions of years, the Aeldari faced almost no rival capable of challenging their dominance. Their society reached such a level of prosperity that material needs ceased to be a concern. Freed from the constraints of labour and survival, they were able to devote their existence to art, philosophy, and science... but also to the pursuit of ever more intense sensations.

This abundance would ultimately cause their downfall.

The Fall: the People Who Destroyed Their Own Empire

As the centuries passed, an ever-growing part of Aeldari society sank into excess. The simplest pleasures were no longer enough. Experiences grew ever more extreme, emotions ever more violent, and excesses ever more numerous.

For millennia, this decadence slowly fed the Warp. The thoughts, desires, and passions of billions of Aeldari eventually gave birth to a new entity of Chaos: Slaanesh, the Prince of Pleasure.

When this god awakened, the consequences were catastrophic.

A gigantic psychic wave swept through the heart of the ancient Aeldari empire. Thousands of worlds were instantly swallowed by an immense Warp storm, which would later become the Eye of Terror. Even more terrible, Slaanesh devoured the souls of almost every Aeldari alive at the moment of its birth, condemning their civilization to a brutal collapse.

This event, known as the Fall, remains to this day one of the greatest catastrophes in the history of the galaxy.

A Species with a Damned Soul

The birth of Slaanesh did not only mark the end of the old empire. It also condemned every survivor.

From that moment on, every Aeldari soul is irresistibly drawn to Slaanesh at the moment of death. Other species simply vanish into the Warp when they die. This is not the case for the Aeldari, who know exactly what fate awaits them. Their soul risks being devoured for all eternity by the god they themselves created.

To escape this curse, they use Spirit Stones.

Every Aeldari carries this crystal throughout their entire existence. When they die, their soul is sealed within it before Slaanesh can seize it. The Spirit Stones are then brought back to the Craftworld, where they join the Infinity Circuit. The spirits of the dead then continue to exist alongside their descendants, protecting their people even after death.

This unique relationship with the dead deeply influences the whole of Aeldari civilization. For them, every loss is final, yet every ancestor continues to guide future generations.

The Craftworlds: the Last Refuges of the Aeldari

Not all Aeldari perished during the Fall.

Long before the catastrophe, some had chosen to leave the heart of the empire to travel aboard immense, self-sufficient space cities known as Craftworlds. Originally, these gigantic vessels served mainly to explore the galaxy or to distance themselves from a society they already considered decadent.

This choice allowed them to survive.

Today, these true artificial worlds still travel through space. Each has its own culture, traditions, armies, and leaders. Some favour the study of the Warp, others excel at war or diplomacy, but all pursue the same goal: preventing their people from repeating the mistakes that led to the Fall.

The Craftworlds now represent the last great bastions of Aeldari civilization.

The Path: a Discipline Against Decadence

The survivors quickly understood that their old way of life could no longer exist.

To avoid falling back into the excesses that had given birth to Slaanesh, they developed an extremely rigorous way of life known as the Path.

Each individual chooses a specific specialization and devotes themselves to it entirely. Some follow the Path of the Artisan, others become artists, diplomats, or pilots. Those who choose the Path of the Warrior temporarily give up every other activity to dedicate themselves exclusively to the art of combat.

This discipline allows them to master their emotions rather than let those emotions dominate them. But it also carries a risk. Some Aeldari end up identifying entirely with their Path and become unable to leave it. They then remain prisoners of the role they chose until the end of their existence.

The Aspect Warriors: Specialists Rather Than Soldiers

Unlike many armies in Warhammer 40K, the Aeldari do not seek to train all-round combatants.

Their army relies on the Aspect Warriors, warriors who have devoted their lives to a single way of waging war. Each Aspect Shrine represents a different facet of the war god Khaine and pushes its specialty to a rarely matched level of perfection.

Fire Dragons excel at destroying armoured vehicles. Howling Banshees hurl themselves into close combat with blistering speed while their psychic screams disorient their enemies. Dire Avengers dominate mid-range engagements through their exemplary discipline. As for the Warp Spiders, they exploit the Warp to appear exactly where their opponents least expect them.

This extreme specialization explains why Aeldari armies often give the impression of executing a perfectly orchestrated plan. Every unit has a precise mission and steps in at exactly the moment it can turn the tide of battle.

An Unmatched Psychic Mastery

The Aeldari are among the most powerful psykers in the entire galaxy.

Their Farseers wield the Warp with a precision few other species can hope to match. They observe the countless possible futures to guide the decisions of their people, constantly searching for the path that offers their civilization the best chance of survival.

However, this mastery comes at a price.

Every time they use their psychic powers, the Aeldari draw closer to the Warp, the realm where Slaanesh dwells, ever watchful. The slightest lapse in concentration can trigger a catastrophe. The greatest psykers must therefore show exceptional discipline in order to use their gifts without drawing the attention of the powers of Chaos.

For the Aeldari, psychic power is never just a weapon. It is at once their greatest strength and their greatest danger.

A War Built on Precision

On the battlefield, the Aeldari favour agility over resilience.

Their vehicles seem to glide above the terrain, their infantry strike before their opponents can react, and their commanders exploit the slightest gap in enemy lines. Where other armies seek to crush their opponent through sheer numbers or firepower, the Aeldari prefer to disorganize their enemy before delivering a decisive blow.

This approach demands near-perfect coordination.

A unit committed to the wrong place can be destroyed within moments. Conversely, a carefully prepared attack can often annihilate a target before it even has a chance to strike back. This military philosophy perfectly reflects their civilization: a precise action is always worth more than a pointless show of force.

The Many Faces of the Aeldari People

The survivors of the Fall did not, however, all choose the same path.

The Aeldari of the Craftworlds live by a strict discipline meant to prevent the return of past excesses.

The Drukhari, settled in the city of Commorragh, adopted a radically different solution. Refusing any form of restraint, they prolong their existence by feeding on the suffering of others in order to slow Slaanesh's grip on their souls.

The Harlequins, for their part, serve the mysterious trickster god Cegorach. They travel the galaxy to preserve the stories of their civilization and often intervene wherever the balance of fate seems threatened.

Finally, the Ynnari believe in the birth of a new god capable of finally freeing their species from Slaanesh's curse. Their movement brings together Aeldari from very different backgrounds around a single hope.

All these factions descend from the same people, yet each offers its own answer to the catastrophe that destroyed their civilization.

The Aeldari on the Tabletop

For players, the Aeldari offer an experience very different from many other armies.

Their playstyle relies above all on mobility, precision, and the ability to strike at the right moment. Most of their units excel in a particular role, but struggle to withstand placement mistakes. A poor decision can prove very costly, while a perfectly coordinated attack can turn a game around in an instant.

This army therefore rewards players who enjoy planning their actions several turns ahead, exploiting their opponent's weaknesses, and using every unit exactly in the role it was designed for.

Their refined aesthetic, elegant vehicles, and numerous painting possibilities also appeal to hobbyists, who appreciate the fine lines, distinctive helmets, and richly decorated armour typical of the Aeldari.
